Tips on Summer Tree Care
Our Tree surgeons Nottingham team are hoping the Summer will bring a change in weather and with it some sunny and dry spells. With such hotter days forecast it means that your trees care is more important than ever. Below we discuss some of the ways you can help to maintain your trees through the Summer months helping them to thrive.
Watering
The amount of water you give your trees depends on various factors such as your soil type, recent weather conditions, the age and type of the tree, and nearby vegetation. If the weather becomes increasingly hot in temperature such intensity can evaporated the water before it even gets chance to be absorbed by the roots.
We recommend that you;
- Water at night or early in the morning when temperatures are cooler
- Deliver water to your trees in a slow method to allow the roots time to absorb it especially in sandier soils that drain quickly.
- Regularly give your trees lots of water to encourage a deep root system. Watering intermittently will lead to root rot and shallow root systems.
- However, avoid over watering which is essentially drowning your trees because this will prevent the roots from being able to absorb oxygen.
- Appropriate water regimes can be identified by professional tree surgeons upon inspection of your current trees simply ask them for their advice.
Dealing with drought
In Summer with such hot weather drought is not uncommon and tree loss can occur. Therefore, if it is known that Summer is going to particular warm and dry a preventative treatment plan is a good idea. Many problems arise from lack of water as well as burning sun and an increase in pests. Pests especially can cause more damage as they begin attacking weakened and water starved trees much earlier. You may find that local authorities will also place water restrictions through seasons of drought which can have an effect on how to treat your trees. Sourcing water by alternative methods such as rain collection can be particularly useful. You should seek advice from tree surgeons on special measures to take during drought periods.
Fertilising
Spring is the time to give your trees slow release fertilizer which will keep it in good condition until around Autumn. The type of fertilizer you should use is often determined by the levels of certain chemicals in your soil such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. A soil test can identify what type of fertilizer will serve you best; a tree surgeon can perform such a task for you.
Mulching
Trees like to have oxygen rich soil that consists of organic nutrients and debris typical of what you would find outdoors in forest locations. However not many of our gardens contain such properties therefore giving your trees mulch will mimic these conditions and provide them with the habitat they love.
Mulching provides other such benefits as
- Retaining soil moisture
- Suppressing weed growth
- Cutting down on competition for water with grass or other vegetation
- Removing the need to mow near the trunk, which protects the root system
